A United Nations report on Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir (IAJK) has accused India of human rights violation in the valley. The report has also recommended the formation of a commission for inquiry into human rights violations committed by India in IAJK. The report, however, has also criticized Pakistan for “detaining separatist leaders in Azad Kashmir”.

The report further asked for investigation into dozens of killings of civilian protesters, by Indian forces, in 2016 after the death of rebel fighter Burhan Wani. After Wani’s death, over 100 civilian protesters were killed by Indian forces resulting in anger and further protests against the Indian occupation of Kashmir.

The Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) has also reported that “the first half of 2019 in Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir (IAJK) witnessed continued and increased violence”. Moreover, according to the report, “the first six months of 2019 recorded 271 killings in IAJK in various incidents of violence, which include 43 civilians, 120 militants and 108 Indian armed forces personnel”.

Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Faisal, in his tweet, has also said that the report reaffirms India’s human rights violations in Kashmir.

Fearing global criticism and embarrassment, the Indian government has not only “rejected” the UN report but had also asked the UN not to publish the report.

The report also invited criticism on India from various social media users. Below are some of those reactions:
