The Unmentionable

Of all the millions

Why choose him?

Are there no others

Even if you don’t know them?

And what did he do when we had him?

Did he bring a revolution?

Change?

Of course, of course

We wish him well,

Even to be free.

But

There are so many buts.

We have to be realistic.

They plan to stay

And can.

They are not perfect

But I hear they mean well

Even if a bit stupid and stubborn,

A bit rough when they shouldn’t be,

Have made a mess of things.

But

They will work things out

Hopefully

And hope is all we have.

And he is that hope

Not an angel but relatively

Yes, an angel for us

Compared to all the others

And who are we?

Just the poor, the young,

The weak and exploited,

The vast majority.

Does that mean anything?

Not really.

Not today.

Some day?

How long is he going to be around?

Forever

In our hearts and hopes.

He’ll outlast them.

We’ll outlast them.

Pakistan will outlast them.
