Beyond the skylines and rapid development, what stands out most in China is the warmth of its people and the humanity that underpins its success.
During an ongoing visit to China, Javed Hassan, Former Chair of the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), has been engaging with universities, policymakers, and professionals to better understand the country’s evolving social and economic landscape. While the visit primarily focuses on education and skills development, it has also offered broader insights into the character and dynamism of Chinese society. This reflection is written as an expression of gratitude toward the people of China and their exceptional hospitality and warmth.
Nearly a fortnight spent in the vibrant metropolis of Shanghai, with a brief weekend visit to Zhuhai, revealed a nation moving rapidly toward the future. The scale of urban transformation is remarkable: modern skylines, efficient infrastructure, and a metro system that stands as a model of precision and cleanliness. These symbols of progress reflect not just economic ambition but a deep cultural commitment to collective advancement.
At Fudan University in Shanghai and Sun Yat-sen University in Zhuhai, interactions with academics and students revealed intellectual curiosity and confidence on par with the world’s best institutions. Their openness to dialogue and critical engagement reflected a generation deeply aware of global challenges and China’s role within them. Everyday observations also offered economic insight, consumer prices, for instance, are broadly comparable to those in Pakistan, signaling a mature urban economy.
Yet, beyond the outward signs of modernity lies a less expected discovery: the quiet generosity and kindness that define daily interactions. Despite the country’s fast-paced rhythm, ordinary citizens consistently display thoughtfulness and empathy. Strangers offer guidance to lost visitors, students assist with digital payments, and small, spontaneous gestures of kindness occur without fanfare.
One particular incident captured this spirit profoundly. At Zhuhai Airport, security officers confiscated a power bank that lacked the required certification. Later, upon arriving in Shanghai with a nearly depleted phone, a fellow passenger on the metro noticed the situation and handed over his own battery pack. When he reached his stop, he refused to take it back, insisting it be kept. The item, worth around 70 to 100 yuan, was offered without expectation or recognition, a quiet act of generosity that transcended cultural barriers.
Such moments reveal a side of China that goes beyond its physical transformation. The Chinese people embody resilience shaped by centuries of hardship, yet remain rooted in humility and grace. Amid the glass towers and rapid innovation, there endures a culture of compassion that reflects the best of human values.
This visit has underscored not only China’s material progress but also its social strength, a nation advancing technologically while preserving the warmth of its spirit. It is this humanity, as much as its development, that leaves the deepest impression and inspires sincere gratitude.
