The Crown of Hunza-Baltit Fort

The region of Gilgit-Baltistan needs no introduction as its natural and captivating beauty is admired all over the country as well as overseas. While most visitors are attracted to the scenic beauty such as the snow-capped mountains and the valleys that curve beautifully into the area, the historical landmarks act as a catalyst for tourism.

One such historic building is the Baltit Fort which is an intricate depiction of the artistic nature of the locals living there. It was founded in the 8th century and served as a home to the ruling Mirs of Hunza who chose it as their home. The delicately crafted valley served as an important location as it allowed the ruling family to enjoy the convenience of controlling the Silk Route.

In 2004, the fort featured on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative list and has since been there. It attracts visitors from all over Pakistan as well as the world as it has been transformed into a museum in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in the 1990’s.

The restored fort now stands proudly in the in the wondrous valley of Hunza and its glorious structure can be viewed from afar. This breathtaking view is truly a place worth visiting – it surely sparks awe and admiration in the eyes of the tourists.

It is unbelievable how the fort manages to glow even in the late hours of the night. While aesthetically pleasing, the rocky and snow covered mountains that surround the location serve as a brilliant contrast to the view.

Not only is the fort an epitome of honour and glory, but it is an encapsulation of the sincere acclaim that people have for the preserved culture of Hunza valley.
