Born in Karachi to a family originally from Peshawar, Dr.Abdul Bari Khan graduated from Dow Medical College, Karachi in 1986. Following completion of fellowship in 1999, Dr.Khan joined the Civil Hospital, Karachi as a Cardiac Surgeon but without a Cardiac Surgery Department.
He has been actively involved in healthcare projects since his college days. He received the ‘Best Social Worker Gold Medal’ during studies at Adamjee Science College.
As a medical student, he also led the Blood Bank and Blood Fractionation Unit of the Patients Welfare Association (PWA). He also helped PWA establish New Emergency and Accident Unit of Civil Hospital Karachi through voluntary donations. Dr.Bari also contributed to the expansion of the operating facilities of the Institute. In about two years, Bari and many other philanthropists were able to raise over 30 Million to establish the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Dow Medical College & Civil Hospital, Karachi.
He was entrusted by the Rufaydah Foundation as its Chief Executive Officer for establishing the Indus Hospital located at Korangi, Karachi. It has been like a dream come true because the prime motive behind this was to serve the under-privileged people of society.
The hospital began in 2007 as a 150-bed tertiary care facility providing absolutely free specialized surgical and medical care. The Indus Hospital has now evolved into a healthcare network – Indus Hospital & Health Network, with presence in Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rahimyar Khan, Badin, and Quetta – in all 13 hospitals across Pakistan.
