A blast near the Kabul University in Afghanistan has killed at least eight people, according to official sources. Afghanistan’s health ministry spokesperson, Wahidullah Mayar, said that another 33 people were wounded in Friday’s explosion.
According to eyewitnesses, two vehicles caught fire following an explosion near the Kabul University in Police District 3 of the city. A number of students were waiting outside the university when the blast happened, sources said.
It is still unclear whether the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber or a remotely detonated bomb, however, no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
Moreover, Taliban’s spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, in a tweet, denied the group’s involvement in the attack. In his tweet, Mujahid said:
The Taliban fighters are not involved in the attack that took place near the university in Kabul today.
The Taliban, however, were involved in another attack yesterday on the Police HQ in Kandahar that killed 12 people.
Even though attacks like these have become a norm in Afghanistan in recent years, they also dent hopes for peace in the country. The Afghan Peace Process has witnessed positive developments in the recent peace with all major stakeholders seemingly close to a consensus.
Moreover, the Taliban had also recently hinted at reducing their attacks in the country.
