Samar Haroon Bilour, member, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly from the Awami National Party, (ANP) joined politics after the tragic death of her husband, Haroon Bilour, who was martyred in a suicide bomb blast during his election campaign in Peshawar on July 10. Samar says, her decision to join politics was purely emotional. She says she was totally shattered by the death of her husband and to take revenge from those who took life of her husband to keep him out of polls, she decided to take part in the by-elections in 2018. She also shared that her party gave her ticket from the constituency that has traditionally been the winning seat for Bilour family for many years, despite knowing that she had no background in politics and that she wont be able to campaign due to her “idaat” period. She got elected with a huge margin and has ever been actively working in her constituency despite the limitations of being in the opposition and having no funds at hand for her constituency development work.
Samar’s maternal family, she says has always been pro-establishment and though she had the opportunity to run in elections from PTI, she still chose ANP since she believes strongly in the ideology of the party as well its pro-peace stance since over a century.
