Zinc is a mineral found in many products like coins, home improvements products, etc. Little is known about what vital role does it play in our body. Zinc is required to send messages along biochemical pathways and to maintain the nervous system health. This important mineral has important function in maintaining our skin, muscular, skeletal and reproductive systems.
Many people suffer from Zinc deficiency which could be due to deficient intake but also due to abnormal Zinc loss in our body or as a result of malabsorption.
While only blood profiles can access the level of Zinc in our body, there are some signs and symptoms that can help us identify Zinc deficiency.
Here are a few signs that you are not getting enough zinc:
Hair loss
Hair cells grow quickly and they eat consume nutrients like zinc as they grow. Zinc also helps in the production of hair oil which moisturizes your scalp, fights bacteria and prevents dandruff, without zinc your head is left unprotected which can hinder hair growth.
Acne
There are many reasons for acne which include hormone imbalances, your skincare routine, hygiene, junk food, etc., but deficiency of zinc could also be a reason for acne. Research suggest that zinc has anti-inflammatory properties that aid in keeping acne at bay.
Loss of appetite
Lack of zinc in your body might result in loss of taste buds which means you may lose appetite. This is the result of disruption of nerves that help your mouth and your brain communicate.
Digestive issues
Without zinc, the nutrients that you get from your food are not absorbed properly and your digestive system struggles which results in diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.
Chronic diseases
Lack of zinc can cause chronic diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer’s, neurological disorders. Lack of zinc in the body can hinder fighting with these diseases.
Dull teethÂ
Zinc is naturally found in saliva and aids in remineralization in teeth besides preventing tooth decay. Without zinc, your teeth won’t shine but the worse is that they become weak and crack easily. Deficient Zinc also results in inflamed gums.
Recurring sickness
Zinc keeps the body healthy by boosting the immune system. Deficiency of Zinc makes you vulnerable to viral and bacterial infections. If you get sick more often it means you do not have enough zinc in your system to go around. This is why many cold medicines have zinc as their main ingredient.
Delayed wound healing
Zinc fights battles for your body you cannot see. When you lack zinc in your body your tissues struggle to repair themselves and hence wounds take longer to heal.
Impaired visionÂ
There’s a clear link between zinc deficiencies and impaired or weakening eyesight. If you are having hard trouble seeing at night you should know that you need zinc. What zinc does is, transports vitamin A from your liver to your retina to produce melanin, a pigment that protects the eyes.
If you are relating to any of these symptoms, do not jump to conclusions, all of these symptoms can also be symptoms of other conditions and this is why it often becomes difficult for doctors too, to identify the deficiency of Zinc in your body. Try eating chicken, oysters, meat, chickpeas, lentils, beans since all of these contain a substantial amount of Zinc.
