Modernisation means the process of adapting something to modern needs or habits. Practices that do not clash with core religious and cultural beliefs or practices, if slightly adapted to ease people in their daily lives, are necessary to cope with the modern-day challenges. In this vlog, Dr. Fouzia Saeed talks about the practice of “idaat” (iddah)- the period a woman must observe after the death of her husband or after a divorce, during which she may not marry another man. Its purpose is to remove any doubt as to the paternity of a child born after the divorce or death of the prior husband. Fouzia argues, that for an elderly lady, there has to be some relaxation in order for her to come out of grief quickly. Watch the vlog for more details about modernisation.
