Just a month after his FIFA Player of the Year Award, and the Golden Boot, Lionel Messi wins another award for his game in the 2018/19 season. After this win, his total number of Ballon D’or awards have risen to 6.
Lionel Messi’s sixth win of the award takes him one up from Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds five Ballon D’or titles. Lionel Messi beat Virgil Van Dijk, the Liverpool Defender, who lost to the Argentinian superstar by a small margin.
Overall, Lionel Messi’s win takes Barcelona’s total number of wins up to 12, leaving Real Madrid one step behind, at 11. The win came after his remarkable 36 goal run in the Spanish League, and his top score in the Champions League. He played his 700th game for the Catalan giants last week against Germany’s Borrusia Dortmund, scoring one and assisting 2 goals out of the 3, by Barcelona.
Even though Virgil Van Dijk helped Liverpool win the Champions League, he fell short of Messi, in the race for the Ballon D’Or. Liverpool’s brilliance was also seen when 4 out of the top 7 players in the Ballon D’or were from the English club.
It was an amazing year for Messi, letting his fans and the football world know that he was still a strong force, far from retirement.
