US President Donald Trump, in his tweet after a detailed conversation with PM Imran Khan, has asked both India and Pakistan to amicably resolve the Kashmir issue.
In its statement, the White House said that President Donald Trump spoke by telephone with Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan, on the need to reduce tensions and moderate rhetoric with India.
President Trump’s tweet was seen by many as a diplomatic win for Pakistan as the US President’s invoking of the Kashmir conflict goes against the Indian position of “bilateralism” on the issue.
“Spoke to my two good friends, Prime Minister Modi of India, and Prime Minister Khan of Pakistan, regarding Trade, Strategic Partnerships and, most importantly, for India and Pakistan to work towards reducing tensions in Kashmir. A tough situation, but good conversations!”, said President Trump in his tweet.
Asfandyar Mir, a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation, has said that “Given India makes a massive fuss about (no) parity with Pakistan and third-party mediation, this tweet is a win for Pakistan”.
Earlier in the day, PM Imran Khan, during his conversation with the US President, told President Trump that India’s actions in Kashmir aimed at bringing demographic changes to the disputed area.
On the other hand, criticism of Indian actions in Kashmir has continued both at home and abroad.
