One of the many environmental challenges Pakistan is facing is the thick smog due to pollution in major industrial cities – Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot. The resultant poor air quality has become a direct health hazard to the lives of people living in those cities.
Malik Amin Aslam, SAPM to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, says that heavy smog is a reality and environmental issues are numerous. They in fact have become more pronounced in the last 10 years but, the government is making efforts to control and minimize air pollution and other types of pollution in the country. He said the government is committed to reducing carbon emissions. An effective response to the mounting pollution lies in instituting effective monitoring systems to measure levels of pollution and find ways to control them. Pakistan, he admits, is poorly equipped to deal with these issues but the PTI government is committed to clean and green Pakistan. Amin Aslam said currently, with the support of the World Bank, 2 monitoring stations are being currently set up in Lahore while another 4 will also be set up by June next year to keep an eye on sources of pollution. Pakistan is trying hard to improve its air quality by enhancing monitoring and introducing controls on sources of emissions.
