Millennials Losing Faith in Democracy

Cambridge University’s Center for the Future of Democracy released a research report on the state of democracies around the world. More than ever before, millennials were observed to be disappointed with the process.

By the time they reach their mid-30s, 55 percent of millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) are dissatisfied with democracy, according to the report. By comparison, when members of Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980) were the same age, less than 50 percent were unhappy with democracy, worldwide.

These statistics were compiled from a survey of 4.8 million people from 160 countries worldwide, between 1973 and 2020. It’s the largest dataset on satisfaction with democracy around the world, per the report.

The data clearly shows that younger citizens are “losing faith in the ability of democracy to deliver,” especially in the wake of COVID-19 because most of the democratic states didn’t handle the health crisis effectively. Moreover, the increasing inequalities in the democratic states especially on the basis of economic grounds, have further strengthened the young lot’s bias against democratic setups.

This makes the millennials the first generation in living memory to have a global majority who are dissatisfied with the way democracy works while in their twenties and thirties.
