India has officially become the most populous country in the world, with over 1.425 billion people, marking a significant shift in demographics. However, the symbolic triumph has not been celebrated by everyone, and some feel it may not translate into a significant economic boost. While India has one of the fastest-growing economies globally, the country also suffers from high youth unemployment and lacks high-paying skilled jobs.
For India to take advantage of its young population, the government must improve infrastructure, skill development, provide more opportunities, improve work environments and develop other basic human resources. China, which was the previous most populous nation, is grappling with a declining and aging population.
While population growth is an asset, it does not translate into superpower status for India. Superpower status is dependent on GDP, technology, military power, and soft power, which India is still working to develop.
