India is the “most unsafe country for women in the world”. Thomson Reuters Foundation published a new report, sparking the old debate yet again by ranking India as the most dangerous place for women. This ranking is due to the cases of sexual violence, rape, child marriages and human trafficking.

In this report, India outranked war-torn countries like Syria and Afghanistan, which stand at number 2 and 3, respectively. According to experts, this ranking is also due to the government not putting measures in place to protect women and their rights. Even after the 2012 case of a young woman’s rape and murder on a bus in New Delhi, the Indian government did not do enough to protect the women in their country.

The poll was established by taking the opinion of women’s rights’ experts across the world. The survey, filled out by 548 experts became controversial, where the public classified it as an opinion, rather than based on facts.

Chairperson of India’s National Commission for Women, rejected the ranking on account of the small sample size. In contradiction, an official in the Southern State of Karnataka stated that “India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women”.
