Chinese Researchers Lead Global AI Adoption in Research: Report

According to the Researchers of the Future Report by Elsevier, a global leader in academic publishing and information analytics, artificial intelligence has become deeply integrated into the research process and is now a key driver of research efficiency and knowledge innovation. The report is based on a survey of more than 3,200 researchers from 113 countries.

The findings show that Chinese researchers are the most proactive in adopting artificial intelligence, with 69 percent already using AI in their research work—significantly higher than the global average of 58 percent.

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in research workflows, the report also underscores the growing importance of research integrity. Around 76 percent of respondents acknowledged the critical role of publishers in safeguarding ethical and responsible research practices. Elsevier’s Chief Product Officer, Hersh, noted that trusted publishers are uniquely positioned to develop AI tools built on reliable content and high-quality data that researchers can depend on.

Despite the rapid uptake of AI, researchers continue to face challenges, including limited AI-related skills, mounting publication pressure, and the need for trustworthy citations and robust training data. While acknowledging AI’s transformative potential, Hersh emphasized that these gaps must be addressed to ensure its responsible and effective use.

The report further highlights that the Chinese research community’s emphasis on compliant and responsible AI adoption is increasingly being viewed as a global benchmark.
