China’s Education Reforms and Graduate Employment Strategies

China is advancing education reforms to better prepare university graduates for the labor market.

In 2024, Chinese Education Minister Huai Jinpeng pledged to promote integrated reforms across education, science, technology, the arts, and talent cultivation, while strengthening the overall national innovation system. By 2025, China has reportedly achieved these goals and is now focusing on creating high-quality employment opportunities for university graduates.

The central leadership has played a key role in these efforts. As a result of coordinated measures, significant progress has been made in securing jobs for the graduating class of 2025. Key initiatives included expanding job opportunities, enhancing support for graduates with specialized needs, and assisting students from less-advantaged universities. Major economic provinces and private enterprises were encouraged to generate additional employment opportunities.

Looking ahead to the graduating class of 2026, Minister Huai called for accelerating comprehensive education reforms and implementing more precise employment policies. He emphasized the importance of stabilizing employment through interdepartmental cooperation and improving the effectiveness of campus recruitment and graduate support services.

The minister also highlighted the need to optimize the structure of academic disciplines to better align with labor market demands, while encouraging proactive collaboration among universities, local governments, and enterprises. Companies were urged to expand graduate recruitment as part of their social responsibility.
