China has provided aid packages for over 27,500 displaced families in Afghanistan through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The donation, made via China Aid’s Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, aims to support households struggling to meet their basic needs, according to the UNHCR.
The aid packages include blankets, kitchen sets, barrels, and plastic tarpaulins, which will be distributed to displaced families. Speaking at the handover ceremony in Kabul, Ma Chenguang, a counselor at the Chinese embassy in Afghanistan, expressed hope that the donation would assist some of the most vulnerable people in Afghanistan as winter approaches, according to a UNHCR statement.
“We are immensely grateful for this important support from China Aid. It enables UNHCR to support displaced families who are struggling in difficult times so that they can meet their basic needs. UNHCR remains committed to helping the most vulnerable in communities across Afghanistan, especially women and girls,” UNHCR’s Representative in Afghanistan Arafat Jamal said.
Jamal highlighted the challenges of Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan and Iran and emphasized the importance of the UNHCR working with the Afghan people to ensure these returns are predictable and sustainable.
The UNHCR chief emphasized: ” Our challenge, as UNHCR and together with the people of Afghanistan, is to make sure that those returns occur in a predictable, stable manner and that people coming back from Pakistan and Iran are able to contribute to economic growth in this country and stability.”
