Are we confusing religion with culture?

Sometimes, we confuse religion with culture, but religion and culture form different aspects of human life – presenting a collective map.

Ignoring and neglecting the tragic events is not the solution, but trying to identify, research, evaluate and deal with these bitter realities is a sign of progress and wisdom.

Sometimes, we confuse religion with culture, but religion and culture form different aspects of human life – presenting a collective map. The two values are interrelated, but cannot be replaced, nor can they be ignored.  History has shown that many powerful elements who tried to eradicate these values, lost their heads, but did not succeed.

Islam, which is a collection of beliefs and practices based on divine revelation, has the following components: beliefs, practices, worship, ethics, and values.  A section of religion refers to a series of systematic propositions concerning the course of human life and the stages of development that lead to the evolution of humanity.  Another part of religion is setting standards and guidelines for living. Values, morals, attitudes, good and bad social traditions, and the commitment of the society towards practicing these values are called culture.

If there is a clash between religion and culture and it leads to confrontation, the root cause is not ambiguity between the two sides in finding out the facts, but fierce competition between religious circles and cultists, based on a low level of knowledge.

Surprisingly, living in the 21st century and with the existence of clear and decisive principles of Islamic Sharia, the children in Afghanistan were eager to enter school, but due to unknown reasons and irrational justification by the authorities, their hopes were dashed.

Unfortunately,  due to the arrogant mentality, half of our population remains in the darkness of ignorance and we will be plunged into the age of slavery as a whole.  This kind of behavior is just the outcome of parochialism – that’s all.

It is clear that remaining silent towards such a mentality inspired by the Stone Age will not only plunge future generations of the country into the darkness of ignorance but will also have a devastating effect on our society.  Such headstrongness would have adverse effects on the future dignity of the religious scholars in our country.

Presently, there is no clear evidence to challenge the authority or domination of the current regime, but if the system collapses, the only reason will be the existence of a few mighty hardliners in the system.  The moderate authorities must convince these narrow-minded individuals with logic.  Even if it is impossible to convince them, it is imperative to remove them from power.

It should be noted that the decisions taken today by the authorities aren’t simple, but they determine the fate of a nation and have a direct impact on the future of our relations with the world. There is currently a religious and national consensus to fight this stubborn mentality.  Finding a way out of this mentality or getting rid of it has become imperative now.

I ask them: are you able to understand the pain and frustration of girls who have been pushed out of school?  How would you feel if your children returned home in despair after seeing the closed doors of the school today?

Think a little deeper, study religious issues in-depth, and don’t confuse religion and culture.  You did not have the agency earlier, but now you have the government.  Arrange discussions and meetings among the scholars of the Islamic world, and make decisions in the light of in-depth and reasoned scientific and jurisprudential justifications. Climb to the top of the mountain, look around, and see which destination you intend to reach and where the country is headed.  This route is not to Mecca but Turkestan.  The nation is reacting to your misbehavior.  Your decisions today will not only plunge our society into the black stamp of ignorance but will turn the future of Afghanistan into a slave country.
