Dr. Rubina Saigol, a nationally celebrated thinker, human rights defender, and educationist, breathed her last in Lahore today, August 27, 2021. Dr. Saigol worked extensively on core social issues of Pakistan including education, human rights, gender equality, and nationalism.
Her contributions to the Pakistani and South Asian feminist movement and thought are unmatched. Being a chief member of the Women Action Forum-Lahore, she fought for women’s rights and secured them many of their inherent rights. Her contributions in the compilation and implementation of the Single National Curriculum to eliminate societal inequalities and gaps.
Her academic writings helped a generation of scholars and activists understand the relationship between state, gender, and nationalism. Her uncompromising politics and incisive feminist analysis of conflict and militarization helped scores of young Pakistani females.
Her sudden demise is a huge loss to Pakistan. Though the trail she blazed will continue, there will be none quite like her.
