Pakistan’s Power Outage: Feast for Conspiracy Theorists

Editor’s Note: Most of Pakistan plunged in darkness shortly before midnight on Saturday, followed by a flood of speculation, conspiracy theories and fake news, disregarding the systemic inadequacies such as incompetence and lack of solid long-term planning. Here is a personal reaction by Syed Haider Mehdi from Toronto, Canada – on what lies behind the latest power outage.

Earlier today a particular post flooded my phone, supposedly from Yunus Dhaga, former Secretary Water and Power, former Finance Secretary and as fine a man as one can find, stating that terrorists had blown up a power facility in Baluchistan which triggered the nationwide blackout!

I was shocked and appalled not as much at the post but the kind of people who forwarded it.

Many unwitting idiots who wanted to earn cheap social media brownie points and be seen to be the “first to share”, while many others with far more sinister agendas.

Here is my take!

*Yunus Dhaga is no longer in government service. He retired prematurely in late 2019. So clearly the post was deliberately concocted by forces inimical to Pakistan, Imran and clearly the Army, to create panic amongst the population, to imply that Imran’s government is ineffective, that the Army, with all its military presence in Baluchistan is ineffective and that terrorists have great power to wreak this kind of menace in Pakistan.*

*Or it was an old post which was dug out and deliberately spread again for highly seditious reasons!*

It could well have been a terrorist attack, but now, as we know, it wasn’t.

I’m only privy to publicly shared information, but hypothetically, if it was a terrorist attack then one would have been very surprised and shocked that such a crucial target was left unguarded or poorly guarded, despite being so vulnerable and creating the kind of chaos that’s taken place.

Given the volatile situation in some parts of Baluchistan, the strong military and law enforcement presence, unless every single military and law enforcement commander in the province forgot his basic training on how to appreciate a situation and conduct SWOT 101, an attack as alleged would have been very very difficult

Here’s the latest official statement.

*A Ministry of Energy spokesperson as well as Omar Ayub, the Minister has said that according to initial reports, the Guddu power plant developed a fault at 11:41pm on Saturday night.* *“The fault caused the country’s high transmission lines to trip, which in turn caused the system frequency to drop from 50 to 0 in less than a second.*

I’m pretty convinced that the Yunus Dhaga post, people so eagerly and happily forwarded, either out of stupid ignorance or deliberate malice, was developed by one of the following as part of this massive 5th Generation warfare against Pakistan, of which many of us have become unwitting or deliberate tools.

*1. Indian intelligence. Most likely*
2. PMLN.
3. PPP.
4. PTM.

I say the above in all seriousness and not to get political mileage by leveling this very serious allegation on two mainstream political parties, whose leaders and agendas I actively oppose or against one highly seditious and questionable 5th columnist type outfit, who I genuinely believe is anti Pakistan.

I say this, especially given the actions of the two political parties and their leaders, sprcifically Maryam Safdar and Bilawal Zardari, since the present government took over, and the kind of lies, distortions, misrepresentations, and quite frankly utter nonsense spewed by them in Public.

If they could do what they did and are doing in full public view, imagine what these three, the PMLN, PPP and PTM, are capable of doing and have been doing, hidden behind the massive walls and veils of Social Media.

*So if its not India, its most likely one of these three. Perhaps all of them as PDM plus PTM.*

We have to be VERY VERY CAREFUL what we forward as we innocently project and promote the agenda of those who want to harm Pakistan and create panic!

By all means we should fight our political battles but we must draw the line when it comes to Pakistan!
