It has been 365 days since Noor Mukadam was brutally killed by Zahir Jaffer, son of a business tycoon Zakir Jaffer and Asmat Adamjee, who tried their hardest to cover track of their beloved son’s cruel act. With every passing day, the horrifying details of this murder shook people worldwide. Noor Mukadam, daughter of diplomat Shaukat Mukadam due to her status brought attention to the rising cases of femicide in Pakistan and stirred a conversation on the loopholes in our justice system.
After a long trial of four months and eight days, on February 24th, a local court in Islamabad passed their verdict on Noor Mukadam’s case and gave a death sentence to Zahir Jaffer. While his mother Asmat Adamjee, father Zakir Jaffer, and cook Jamil were acquitted, along with the CEO Tahir Zahoor and all employees of Therapy Works. The verdict brought hope for people in the judiciary but justice is still far from being served.
Osman Khalid Butt, among many other celebrities, took to Twitter to express their thoughts about the verdict.
While Ushna Shah said, “Will celebrate justice once he hangs, which could take years.”
Unfortunately, this murder is not an isolated event in our country and might not be the only femicide case in Pakistan. The violence against women keeps rising in Pakistan and justice is nowhere to be found. Pakistan demands justice for Noor and women like Noor who were taken from us, brutally… sometimes in name of honor, on basis of gender and power dynamics.
