Pakistani Women Who Made Us Proud Abroad

Laraib Atta:
She is Pakistan’s first Visual effect artist to work for Hollywood. A professional VFX artist from Isakhel, Mianwali,Pakistan, she is the daughter of veteran singer Attaullah Esakhelvi. She worked as a visual effects artist for a myriad of Hollywood films including 10,000 BC, The Chronicles of Narnia, Prince of Persia, Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past. She also worked for BBC, Glassworks Barcelona and MPC. Back in 2006, she started her career as working for advertisement for George Michael, Rolling Stones and Disney. The talented Pakistani young girl has even shown her credibility in Johnny Depp’s Sweeney Todd, 10,000 BC and in the Chronicles of Narnia sequels. She has also worked for Olympics promo China, Nike Football World Cup.

Yasmeen Lari:
Pakistan’s first woman architect who has won the Women in Architecture Award- the Jane Drew Prize- in recognition of design excellence. She is known for her work that combines architecture with questions of social justice.

Zenith Irfan:
In 2016, she started travelling across Pakistan on a motorcycle to fulfill her father’s dream. Today she is the first Pakistani female motorcyclist to ride across Pakistan.

Ayesha Ayaz:
Pakistan’s youngest female athlete in Taekwondo has won a gold medal in 34kg category at the 8th Fujairah Open Taekwondo Championship. Ayesha Ayaz, a nine-year-old student of Class IV from Swat district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, started practicing in the sport at the age of three. She has already managed to earn honors of being a five-time district champion, two-time provincial champion and three-time national champion.

Rukhsana Parveen and Sofia Javed: Rukhsana and Sofia became the first Pakistani women to bag international medals in boxing at the South Asian Games in Shillong.

Minhal Sohail:
The 21-year-old became Pakistan’s first female shooter to compete at Olympics 2016. Although, she couldn’t win gold and secured 28th position in the 10m air rifle event, Minhal has made us proud by qualifying for the Rio Games.

Fiza Farhan:
The CEO of Buksh Foundation and director of Buksh Energy was elected as a member of the first-ever High-Level Panel of the UN Secretary-General on Women’s Economic Empowerment in February. She was also part of the ’30 under 30’ list by Forbes magazine for Social Entrepreneurs in 2015.

Maria Umar:
‘The Women’s Digital League’ is the brainchild of Maria Umar and is an online platform that offers digital training and job opportunities for Pakistani women. In particular, it offers a way for women to work while still at home.

Jehan Ara:
She is the President of one of the largest tech associations in the country called P@SHA. Alongside this, she is a strong supporter of startups and entrepreneurship.

Mehak Gul:
Mehak is a 15-year-old, Pakistani chess champion who first started playing chess at the age of six and has since then been taking part in championships both in Pakistan and abroad. At 12, Mehak was the youngest person to represent Pakistan at the World Chess Olympiad and she etched her name in the Guinness World Record Book for arranging the chess keys on the board with just her left in only 45 seconds.
